Dr Cutmore commenced his career with CSIRO in 1983 as a Research Scientist having graduated from the University of New South Wales with both a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a PhD in solid state physics. His research interests at CSIRO were predominantly in microwave and radio frequency technologies for the on-line analysis of materials in the minerals and energy industries. As Research Director for 20 years, he led the development and commercialisation of technologies for mining, mineral processing and national security and the founding of 5 companies. Nick is one of the most awarded research scientists in Australia, having been awarded the Australia Prize (Prime Ministerial award), the Prime Ministers Prize for Innovation, the CSIRO Chair’s Medal, the CSIRO Medal for Research Achievement, and the Eureka Prize in Support of Defence and National Security. He is an elected Fellow of the Academy of Technology and Engineering.
